Papaver somniferum (Papaveraceae)

An erect, easy to grow annual that has become a garden favorite. A drought tolerant species that produces a long slender taproot. The unique flowers are double to semi-double frilled with numerous finely cut petals in a distinctive dark burgundy color. In the summer sun, from a distance, the flowers almost appear black in color hence the name "Black Swan". The foliage is grayish-green in appearance and the stems and leaves are sparsely covered with coarse hairs. Requires full sun in fertile well-drained soil. Self-sows freely. The attractive seed pods make a useful addition to dried flower arrangements.
