Wild Bergamot/Bee Balm Monarda fistulosa (Lamiaceae)

A very hardy, aromatic perennial native to North America. A true member of the Mint family with square stems. The lance shaped leaves are slightly toothed and are arranged opposite on the stems. Flowers are solitary on a single, sturdy stem. The 2 to 4 inch blooms, are soft shades of lavender to pink in color. Plants spread easily by seed or rhizomes. Prefers full sunshine to partial shade in a wide range of soil types. Many bees, butterflies and hummingbird species use Wild Bergamot as a nectar source. Deer do not seem to find this plant palatable. Once established, a very reliable species year after year.
